Are You Wasting Too Much Time?

Most people waste a lot of time. They go to work, and they waste time while at work. Then, they come home, and they plant themselves in front of the television for the rest of the evening until they go to bed. If this is something you do, is it working for you?

What should you be doing instead of wasting time? Is it ever okay to waste time? You don’t have to spend all waking hours being productive. In fact, it’s healthy to strike up conversations with your co-workers or teammates. This is how you get to know them better, and they get to know you.

However, if you are falling behind on your work, then you’ll need to cut back on your socialization initiatives. You don’t need to cut them out entirely. You want to reduce the amount of time you spend on this activity.

After work, it seems like the right thing to do to relax in front of the television. The problem is we live in an increasingly competitive world. No person or company is going to wait for you to play catch up. You need to stay current with your skills and learn new ones. If you aren’t willing to do this, you may get a nasty surprise in the form of a pink slip from your company. When this happens, it won’t be easy to find a new job as your skills are now obsolete. You may have to find alternative employment paths and take a cut in pay.

It’s not necessary to learn new skills each day when you come home from work. However, you have to put in the effort, and you have to be consistent. That is the only way you will get anything out of the activity of learning.

If you have the ability to learn at work, you should take advantage of that. As long as the courses offered are relevant to updating your skills, you can use time at work to take courses. It’s better to do this in short durations than to cram your learning into one long session. However, both will help you with your goals of keeping your skills up-to-date.

If your company offers tuition reimbursement, you may consider taking advantage of this. You don’t even need to physically go to a college campus as many programs are now offered online. This is convenient, assuming you stay disciplined to do the work.
